Caring for merino and technical fabrics

Most premature wear we see comes from over-washing and from fabric softener. Both are avoidable.

Merino wool

• Wash cold on a gentle cycle, inside out. Machine washing is fine - modern merino is not hand-wash-only.
• Use a wool-safe detergent. Skip fabric softener entirely; it coats the fibre and kills the odour resistance you paid for.
• Dry flat or on a rack. A tumble dryer will felt it and it will not come back.
• Wash less than you think. Merino resists odour for several wears - airing it overnight is often enough.

Technical shells and DWR

• Wash with a technical cleaner, not regular detergent, which leaves residue that attracts water.
• Tumble dry low or warm-iron through a cloth. Heat is what re-activates the durable water repellent finish.
• When water stops beading and starts soaking in, the DWR needs reproofing, not replacing. A spray-on or wash-in reproofer restores it.

Pilling

Light pilling at friction points is normal on merino and is not a defect. A fabric comb takes it off in a minute. Heavy pilling across a whole panel within the first few wears is not normal - send us photos.
